Government of Canada programs

Your RDSP May Come With More Than Your Own Contributions

Up to $70,000

Canada Disability Savings Grant

Matching grants may be paid into an RDSP based on contributions, family income and available carry-forward entitlement.

Up to $20,000

Canada Disability Savings Bond

Bonds may be paid into an RDSP for qualifying beneficiaries based on family income, with no personal contribution required.

Up to $90,000

Potential Lifetime Government Grants + Bonds

Combined lifetime program maximums for grants and bonds, subject to Government of Canada rules and individual eligibility.

Depending on eligibility, income, contributions, age and available carry-forward entitlement, the Government of Canada may contribute grants and/or bonds to an RDSP.

Some qualifying beneficiaries may receive Canada Disability Savings Bonds without making personal contributions.

Maximum amounts are lifetime program limits and are not guaranteed. Actual eligibility depends on Government of Canada rules, DTC eligibility, family income, age, contributions and other factors.

Where Are You With Your RDSP?

I Don’t Have an RDSP Yet

If you or your family member has been approved for the Disability Tax Credit, let’s determine what RDSP options may be available and how grants and bonds could fit into the plan.

RDSP second opinion

Already Have an RDSP? It May Be Worth a Second Look.

Opening an RDSP is only the first step.

Over time, your financial situation, investment objectives, risk tolerance and the beneficiary’s needs can change.

An RDSP review can help you understand how the account is currently structured and whether it still aligns with your long-term goals.

During an RDSP review, we can look at:

  • Current RDSP balance
  • Contributions made
  • Government grants received
  • Government bonds received
  • Potential unused grant or bond entitlement
  • Current investments
  • Investment allocation
  • Risk tolerance
  • Fees and product structure
  • Beneficiary's age and planning timeline
  • Long-term withdrawal considerations
  • Whether the existing RDSP remains appropriate
  • Whether another RDSP provider or investment structure should be considered

An RDSP beneficiary can generally have only one RDSP open at a time.

If a transfer is appropriate, an RDSP can be transferred directly from one provider to another for the same beneficiary. The full RDSP is transferred and the previous plan is closed once the transfer is completed.

This is a suitability review, not a recommendation to move your plan. Transfers are only discussed where appropriate for your individual circumstances.

What you hold inside the plan

Your RDSP Is an Account. What You Hold Inside It Matters Too.

An RDSP provides the registered structure, but the investments held inside the plan can affect how the money grows over the long term. Your investment strategy should reflect factors such as:

  • Investment objectives
  • Risk tolerance
  • Beneficiary age
  • Time horizon
  • Expected future withdrawals
  • Costs
  • Guarantees and product features

Different RDSP investment structures offer different features, costs and risks. We help determine what is appropriate for your circumstances.

One available solution

An Insurance-Company RDSP Option

When appropriate for a client’s needs, Coach Maiden has access to Empire Life’s Registered Disability Savings Plan.

Empire Life’s RDSP holds an Empire Life Guaranteed Investment Funds GIF 75/75 segregated fund contract. In plain language, that provides access to diversified investment options within a segregated fund contract and includes insurance guarantees.

75% Maturity Guarantee
75% Death Benefit Guarantee

Investment options can range from fixed-income strategies to equity-oriented strategies depending on the client’s investor profile.

Guarantees are subject to the terms and conditions of the insurance contract. Guarantees apply to the contract features described in that contract; investment returns are not guaranteed and the value of the plan can rise or fall.

Investment recommendations are based on individual suitability.

The wider picture

The RDSP Is Part of a Bigger Financial Picture

For many families, planning doesn’t stop with the RDSP.

Once the RDSP strategy is established, other areas of the family’s financial plan may also need attention.

  • Family investments
  • Retirement planning
  • TFSAs and RRSPs
  • Insurance and income protection
  • Education planning
  • Estate and legacy planning

These are other planning areas that may become relevant depending on your family’s circumstances. None of them are part of the RDSP consultation.
